River Cottage Bunting

The River Cottage Fishing Bag

We've said it many times before, just about all of us at River Cottage love fish and fishing and there's nothing quite like catching it yourself and then taking it home and cooking it. Perhaps the only thing that can beat that is cooking your catch in a special way right then and there!

Well we've discovered the perfect way of doing that. A fishing bag full of loads of fishing goodies including a telescopic rod, a crayfish net and a portable fish smoker!
The fishing bag or satchel has been locally handmade by our friend Rosie and has a wide shoulder strap, making it easy to carry that heavy load of fish. It has a fold over flap that secures with two metallic poppers and a handstiched picture of a mackerel on the flap.

The crayfish net is cleverly designed with a zip pocket to put bait in, a zip to stow the securing line and clips to hold it flat for ease of storage in the bag. When in use the net measures about 500mm long and has apartures measuring 80mm diameter at each end to let the crayfish in.

You need a licence to set a crayfish trap, for more information click here.

The spinning rod we use is a John Wilson Prime 9 foot telescopic rod with a 15 – 45 gram casting weight and comes complete with a John Wilson Prime P45 fishing reel.

The reel comes with a single ball bearing, big line roller, silent anti-reverse, balanced rotor, the gear ratio is 4.75 and comes complete with 200 yards of 10lb line.

The rod comes in a soft carrying case with eye protector and whilst just under 2ft collapsed it extends to 9ft.

Last but not least the fascinating fish smoker. This folds in to a manageable tin which is also part of the smoker itself. It comes complete with a pot to hold your combustable material, a griddle tray and handle. We've even thrown in a 1kg bag of oak sawdust!

The smoker of course comes complete with instructions and we'll include a River Cottage recipe for smoked mackerel.

River Cottage Spring in to Summer Hampers

River Cottage Spring in to Summer Hampers

This year's TV programme, “River Cottage Spring” has a big drive to encourage everyone to eat well at home by getting back in to the kitchen and do some traditional home cooking and to grow and harvest produce from the garden, and we think we've come up with a really nice way to get you started.  Even if you are a complete novice gardener with just a small balcony or a nervous chef that has only ever re-cooked, and burnt a hard-boiled egg, we can help you get started! We have selected a range of products to get you in the mood and packed them in to one of our River Cottage Hampers.

What could be better than some home-made organic bread made to a recipe from the team and spread with some delicious Devon honey? Amongst the many delights for the gardener, we have selected some seeds from Tamar Organics to grow herbs and salad crops using your own pots made out of recycled newspapers, and other gardening items to help your seedlings on their way. All British or FSC certified of course.

Just the thing for a River Cottage fan, we feel these great products would appeal to your friends too as an introduction to River Cottage and our ethos. The perfect thank you gift or house warming present, it will spur you on to get out there and start growing your own.

We have put together three starter hampers for you, The Kitchen Hamper, The Garden Hamper and a combination of these two, The Kitchen and Garden Hamper, all great for yourself or as a gift.

Beech chopping boards

Beech chopping boards

Both of our kitchens at Park Farm and at the Axminster Canteen use these beautiful beech chopping boards.

These boards are made locally by our friend Mike and customers on events often asked if they were available to buy!

The boards are all made from English Beech and handcrafted in Mike's Chideock workshop.

We have three types of boards available, two sizes of the smooth edged beech chopping boards and the popular rough edged rustic look chopping board.

We use them both for presentation and for chopping on. The small chopping board is ideal for canapes and the larger board is ideal for bread.

The smaller smooth edged chopping board measures approximately 23cm x 16cm whilst the larger is approximately 38cm x 23cm. They have cut outs at each end to make carrying easier.

The rough edged chopping boards are ideal for presentation of food when you are looking for that rustic look and are sturdy enough to use as a cutting surface.  The dimensions are approximately 40cm by 25cm although as they are made with rustic edgings these do vary slightly.  The boards have cut out handles at each end to make it easy to use as a tray or presentation.

Please note that to achieve this look two pieces of wood are joined and glued together, we therefore recommend that they are not cleaned in a dishwasher.

Green Kitchen Garden

Green Kitchen Garden

Our food choices - what we buy, what we grow and how we grow it - are one of the most powerful ways in which we affect the world we live in. During the course of the day, we will look for ways to use that power positively and sustainably, minimising our eco-footprint and creating a greener Kitchen Garden into the bargain.

The morning will begin by focusing on some of the main issues – how and where we shop, carbon emissions, resource use, and the benefits (and impacts) of growing our own. We will audit our shopping and examine our gardening methods to identify the most and least sustainable. We will start to look at how creating a Green Kitchen Garden can help us minimize our eco-footprint and maximise our sustainability. This will include energy use, ways to recycle and reuse, making compost, minimising water consumption and ethical sourcing

You will learn how soil care, nutrient cycling and organic practices can make the difference in creating a truly green plot. We will also look at the idea of a low carbon diet, and the importance of what we choose to grow.

The River Cottage Kitchen Team will then prepare a delicious seasonal lunch using ingredients from the Kitchen Garden.

The afternoon will begin with a tour of River Cottage HQ, including the Kitchen Garden, to see some of the ways in which we are trying to make the farm truly sustainable. You will see how we are tackling the big issues head on, and how some of the ideas from the morning are being put into place, and you will have the chance to let us know where you think we can improve. We will also see the importance of keeping a balance with wildlife in the Kitchen Garden, from attracting beneficial animals to dealing with pests in a sustainable way.

A visit to the Climate Change Garden will illustrate how we may soon be able to add previously ‘foreign’ food (such as olives and peaches) to the Kitchen Garden - without all those atmosphere-bashing food miles – and the dramatic impact this could have on our carbon footprint.

So, whether you are looking to start a green allotment or take your existing plot to the next level and give yourself a low carbon diet into the bargain, come and join Caroline, Mark and the River Cottage Team for a fascinating and inspirational day.
