Learn to Cook the River Cottage Way at River Cottage Cookery School

Spend the day discovering the essence of River Cottage cooking, as you master a range of techniques with our expert chefs.

Your day begins with the basics of seasonal, sustainable cooking, the foundation of everything we do at River Cottage. From there, you’ll explore a variety of dishes that celebrate the best of the kitchen garden, the coast, and the countryside.

Bake your own loaf of fresh bread, prepare a vibrant vegetable dish straight from the garden, and learn to cook fish and meat with confidence and care. Round off your day with a seasonal pudding, then enjoy the fruits of your labour over a shared lunch in true River Cottage style.

This hands-on cookery course is the perfect introduction to the River Cottage approach. With inspiring recipes, expert tuition, and a focus on local, seasonal ingredients, you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to cook delicious, sustainable meals at home.

Is this course suitable for me?  Due to the varied content, this course isn’t suitable for those with allergies or specific dietary requirements. However, we do offer other courses that cater to gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets. We recommend this course for participants aged 12 and up. Under-16s must be accompanied by a paying adult. These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all our guests. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or need more information.

ARRIVE

If you choose to walk, enjoy a 10–15 minute stroll from the car park along scenic pathways to the farm, taking in the stunning valley views. A Land Rover lift is available in poor weather or if you prefer not to walk. Once at the cookery school, meet your host and start the day with tea, coffee, and freshly baked treats.

SESSION ONE

Dive right in by learning the art of bread-making as you create your very own farmhouse dough. Throughout the day, you’ll have the chance to knead, shape, and bake your loaves to perfection.

SESSION TWO

We wouldn’t be River Cottage if we didn’t grow a variety of incredible vegetables here on the farm. Discover our passion for seasonal produce as you’re guided through preparing your first dish of the day, highlighting the freshest ingredients straight from our garden.

SESSION THREE

Next, you’ll explore the world of sustainable fish, preparing a quick and easy dish using the freshest catch of the day from our local supplier.

LUNCH

It’s time to take a well-deserved break and enjoy the delicious fish and vegetable dishes you’ve crafted this morning. Organic drinks will be available separately to accompany your meal.

SESSION FOUR

After lunch, you’ll explore the rich flavours of lesser-known cuts of meat, crafting a delicious dish with hands-on guidance from your expert chef tutor.

SESSION FIVE

You’ll wrap up the day by creating a delicious dessert, uncovering the secrets to perfecting sweet treats and learning how to adapt recipes using seasonal ingredients.

DEPARTURE

There will be plenty of time to chat with fellow guests and the River Cottage team, sharing tips and stories, before heading back up the hill at 5pm with your freshly made goods in hand.
