Build Your Own Cob Garden Oven

Discover how to build and cook in a cob oven on our course at River Cottage. In this one-day course, you’ll be guided through the process of building your own oven from natural materials, perfect for outdoor cooking.

After constructing a cob oven, you’ll turn to the art of wood-fired cooking, making your own delicious pizzas while enjoying stunning views of the Devon countryside.

This course is perfect for anyone looking to learn how to build a sustainable oven and create delicious food with a wood-fired touch. Whether you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast or simply looking for a fun, hands-on experience, this course is for you.

*Please note: While you won’t be taking a cob oven home (it would be quite a challenge!), you’ll gain all the skills and confidence to build your own.

Is this course suitable for me?  This course isn’t suitable for those with wheat intolerances. We recommend this course for participants aged 12 and up. Under-16s must be accompanied by a paying adult. These guidelines are in place to ensure the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all our guests. ARRIVE AT RIVER COTTAGE

Your River Cottage experience will begin with a 10-15 minute walk along the beautiful pathways leading to the farm, allowing you to truly soak in the stunning views of the valley.

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME

You’ll meet your tutor and kick off the day with tea, coffee, and freshly made treats from the kitchen.

SESSION ONE

You'll start by discovering the materials and building techniques behind creating a traditional cob oven—get ready to get your hands dirty and have some fun!

SESSION TWO

Next, get stuck in as you help shape the oven form, mix the cob, and start building your oven with the group.

SESSION THREE

You'll learn how to light your oven, discover which wood works best, and master the techniques for getting the perfect cooking temperature.

LUNCH

Time for lunch! Enjoy a delicious wood-fired pizza that you’ve made yourself.

SESSION FOUR

After lunch, your River Cottage Chef Tutor will guide you through making bread dough and baking it in the oven.

DEPARTURE

You’ll have time to enjoy the aroma of freshly baked bread before heading back up the hill with your loaf.
