Experience Our Signature Mushroom Foraging Day

Step into the heart of autumn with the ultimate mushroom foraging experience at River Cottage. Set in our stunning woodland surroundings during the peak of fungi season, this full-day adventure offers everything a mushroom lover could hope for. Guided by expert forager and folklorist Nick Phillips, you will uncover the secrets of wild fungi and gain the confidence to identify and gather them safely.

Your day begins with an introduction inspired by the much-loved River Cottage Mushroom Handbook, before heading out into the woods with two baskets in hand: one for edible treasures and one for curiosities. You will explore the rich biodiversity of our landscape, learning how to forage responsibly and connect more closely with the land.

The experience continues with a chef-led cooking demonstration and a seasonal lunch crafted from the day’s finds. This hands-on day celebrates the fascinating world of fungi in every sense, leaving you inspired, more knowledgeable, and ready to forage with confidence at home.

  1. Diana

“Our chef teacher was enthusiastic, friendly and very helpful and informed. I love cooking and I really enjoyed myself. However long you’ve been cooking you can always learn new things and the dishes we made were all delicious.”

  2. Jeanette

Great food and all fresh and local, fabulous staff, we picked up plenty of tips

  3. Karen

Really good. Great mix of garden walk, demonstrations at the front, and us doing the cooking. Lots of tips during the day. Really good having Sean on hand to support and facilitate. I’m fairly neurodivergent and struggle to do two things at once (listen to instructions and do) but I found it easy to keep up. Excellent day.

  4. George

Brilliant chef for the day, it was amazing thankyou, and really appreciate the hard work and effort that must go on behind the scenes everyday to organise all you do, as well as to do the day itself thankyou.

  5. Kevin

“Fantastic food. Perfect for a day in the woods looking for mushrooms. My only regret is I had the car and so could not match the tastes to wine and/or beer/cider.”

  6. Zoe

Well organised, relaxed, great environment to learn – I enjoyed the course and it was inspiring too!
