Overview

Join Adam as he guides you step-by-step through building and planting your own raised bed. You’ll learn how to construct the bed, select the right soil, and establish a timeline for your project. Plus, Adam will provide endless inspiration for what you can grow throughout the year, along with tips on companion planting and crop rotation.

Salad is a four-season staple at River Cottage, and Adam will share how he keeps us supplied with fresh leaves and exciting salad ingredients, even during the depths of winter. You’ll learn how to harvest salad leaves effectively to maximize your yield, along with a Four Season Salad Planting Plan to keep your garden thriving year-round.

Adam will also introduce you to various herb varieties you can grow at home. He’ll discuss the pros and cons of different herbs and provide insights into their specific needs regarding sunlight, soil, and water. You’ll learn how to plant to ensure a diverse herb garden throughout the year, as well as how to care for and harvest your herbs for a healthy and abundant supply.

In the final lesson, Adam will explore the resurgence of perennial vegetables. These low-maintenance crops are planted once and can be harvested continuously for years, making them both sustainable and arguably more nutritious than annual vegetables.

Once established, perennial vegetables can tap into deeper water sources and soil nutrients that annual crops, with their shallower roots, cannot access. They also promote long-term soil health. Adam will show you how to incorporate perennial vegetables into your new raised bed and how to grow them successfully at home.
