A bowl of oats topped with roasted plums.

Roasted Plums with Star Anise, Toasted Oats and Kefir

Victoria plums are one of the stars of the British fruit season, with their sweet and tangy flavour shining from late summer into early autumn. In this simple recipe, they’re roasted with star anise, topped with oats and served warm with kefir or natural yoghurt for a comforting breakfast or light dessert.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.

  2. Add the plums to a roasting dish along with the star anise and sugar. Toss everything together to coat the fruit evenly.

  3. Roast for 5–10 minutes, depending on the ripeness of your plums. As soon as they begin to soften and puff slightly, remove from the oven.

  4. Scatter over the oats and return the dish to the oven for another 5 minutes. The plums should now be soft and beginning to break down, and the oats lightly toasted.

  5. Remove the star anise before serving. Spoon into bowls and top with a generous splash of kefir or a dollop of yoghurt.

Swap it out

Peaches make an excellent alternative if plums are out of season – just adjust the roasting time slightly depending on their ripeness.

  • 1kg Victoria plums, halved and stones removed

  • 4 star anise

  • 1 tbsp muscovado sugar

  • 50g porridge oats
