The Importance of Mulching

We sat down with Jonny Callis, Head Gardener at River Cottage, to dive into the world of mulching and why itโs such an important task for your autumn garden. Plus, weโve teamed up with the compost experts at RocketGro to bring you some special insight.
Why Mulching Matters
There isnโt just one secret to improving soil healthโitโs a mix of approaches. By encouraging a variety of microbes, youโre setting your garden up for success. Luckily, a few small changes can have a big impact.
One task that offers huge benefits is mulching. Simply put, mulching involves covering the soil, which helps prevent weeds and shields the soil from harsh winter weather. It also protects the fertility of your soil by slowing water runoff and helping it soak in.
Mulching can be done using a wide range of materialsโautumn leaves, straw, compost, or even woodchips. Some people even use old carpets! While these can all help, organic materials that decompose slowly are the most beneficial. As they break down, they enrich the soil, providing food for earthworms and beneficial fungi. This boosts your soilโs microbiome and ensures your plants have the nutrients they need to thrive through winter and into the next growing season.
At River Cottage, we mulch around our overwintering cropsโgarlic, onions, broccoli, and kale. This gives them the best possible start when spring comes around.
Why We Love RocketGroโs Magic Mulch
If youโre looking for the perfect mulch, RocketGroโs Magic Mulch is a fantastic choice. Itโs certified organic and chemical-free! Unlike heavier materials that can attract slugs or blow away, Magic Mulch has a fine texture that deters pests and enriches the soil. Plus, itโs a by-product of biogas production, meaning itโs sustainable and eco-friendly. The biodigestate in all RocketGro composts provides vital nutrients and natural microbes, making it a superior alternative to peat-based products.
What Else Is Happening in the River Cottage Garden?
Beyond mulching, weโve been busy clearing space in our polytunnels for winter salads and dividing herbaceous perennials as they settle into dormancy. Weโre also deep into planning next yearโs cropsโthereโs always something exciting happening in the garden!
